This year’s Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) was an amazing event. According to the show organizers, “attendance at the annual conference reached a 46-year high of 108,300, the highest in show history and up 3.3% from last year.

Obviously, our perspective is on communication solutions for the oil and gas industry. With that in mind, here are just a few of the observations made by the Sensear team throughout the 4 days in Houston:

  • OTC is becoming more of a global event than in years past. In fact, Offshore Technology Conference organizers said that international companies made up 44% of exhibitors, and we felt like the attendee demographics followed suit
  • Communicating while wearing hearing protection is becoming more of a global focus within the oil and gas industry
  • Hearing protection alone is not sufficient but needs to be coupled with communications ability with true situational awareness to provide a truly safe offshore environment
  • Intrinsically safe equipment certifications are increasingly critical in the oil and gas industry to protect a company’s physical assets and workers
  • On-rig, person-to-person communications tends to be an afterthought in the budgeting process
  • Communications solutions for high-noise environments are continuing to get more sophisticated, with more need for integration with today’s communication devices
