Hearing Protection and Communications Solutions for Petrochemical and Oil & Gas

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that within the Oil and Gas Extraction sector, 25 to 30 percent of workers, almost 1 in 3, had hearing loss.

The opportunities for severe or fatal injuries when working in Petrochemical, Oil and Gas are extensive. From slips, trips, and falls to explosions, high-pressure lines, vehicle injuries, machine hazards, struck-by, caught-in, and caught-between, the list goes on and on.

Few industries can claim the risk of hazard that exists for petrochemical, oil, and gas workers on the job. Unfortunately, noise and hearing loss is not typically considered as critical as other more prevalent dangers like slips, trips, and falls. Because hearing loss is more gradual and not typically immediately noticeable, it is less recognized than other injuries.

According to a study published in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, approximately 61% of workers in mining and oil and gas extraction have been exposed to hazardous noise levels on the job.
According to the CDC, nearly 20% of workers exposed to noise in Mining Oil Gas (MOG) have hearing impairment in both ears.

Hearing damage is preventable, but it cannot be undone. There is no surgery or cure for noise-induced hearing loss. Repeated exposure to high noise levels, such as working near machinery or operating heavy equipment, can lead to permanent hearing loss or tinnitus.

Sensear is Solving High-Noise Communication Problems for Many of the World’s Leading Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Companies

There are a variety of high-noise environments associated with the four phases of oil and gas development, including drilling, hydraulic fracturing, completion, and production. Truck traffic, well pumps, compressors, drilling, fracturing, flaring, and venting can all create significant and harmful noise levels, particularly with long-term exposure. That is why providing workers with Sensear’s noise-suppression headsets is critical to mitigating the serious risk of hearing loss.

A WorkSafeBC study among Canadian OGE workers found noise exposures as high as 116 dB(A), with the top three areas of exposure represented by vac trucks, rig engine rooms, and pump trucks--all exceeding 100 dBA.

With Sensear headsets, workers can have seamless conversations whether they are face-to-face, connected via short range, or on their two-way radio or Bluetooth-enabled devices, all while protecting their hearing using high-quality, noise-suppression headsets.

Sensear’s range of Two-Way Radio and/or Bluetooth® Headsets and Earplugs are powered by groundbreaking SENS® (high noise communication) Technology that elevates speech and suppresses dangerous background noise so workers can hear speech and stay protected in high-noise environments. The result is increased job site safety with enhanced communications and vital 360° situational awareness.
